Zotter Olive and Lemon Dark Chocolate Bar

I’ve mentioned more times than I care to remember how I love the designs of the Zotter chocolate bars, the golden inner-wrapping and detailed nutritional information, so I won’t go over it again. And seeing as I’m off to the Speciality Chocolate Fair and have got loads of odds ‘n ends to tie up (like work out where I’m going for a start) I thought I’d just give this bar a quickish review.

With most dark chocolate bars I review there’s a definite block system with the bar mould, but Zotter do most things differently and that includes basically just having a sheet mould where you can choose bite off the amount of chocolate that’s most suitable to you. With most Zotter bars I’ll just have a small nibble first as you never know what you’re going to get, especially with bars like the Raspberry, Coconut and Trout and the Peanuts and Ketchup. Another feature of the Zotter bars that seems to be consistent across most, if not all, is that they’ve got a definite acidity, and it’s true with this one too. In fact not only is aroma fairly pungent, but the flavour is too.

At first my mouth recoiled with sweet lemoniness of it, but that’s to be expected. One thing I’m glad I didn’t get too much of was any sort of olive flavour. It must be known that there are only two things I won’t eat plain and they are olives and sweet corn. It wasn’t until the last month that I actually tried my first olive (under duress) for the first time in about 20 years!

If the truth be known, I didn’t get any sort of chocolate flavour, and only a chocolaty texture came through at the very end. The whole experience was very much taken over by the lemon and lime flavours and it’s a good thing that I’m a big fan of those as pretty much that’s all you’ll get.

The first bite is the most noticeable as after that the flavours become less pronounced and the bar becomes more enjoyable and you start to focus more on the texture which is somewhere between chocolate and cake – I just don’t know how they manage it at all!

So onto a quick rating here. I think that as it’s such an acquired taste, it has an unusual texture that I can only give it something like a 67% as it certainly improved as I had more of it.
