Zotter Raspberry, Coconut and Trout Chocolate Bar

Zotter Raspberry, Coconut and Trout Chocolate Bar Packaging

Yes, you read that right! Trout! I don’t think I’ll get many people complain if I put this bar into the ‘unusual chocolate’ category! I just had to have this Raspberry, Coconut and Fish Gum chocolate when I was surfing the Zotter Austria website! And I did have a whole heap of trepidation whilst getting ready to review it.

As is usual with Zotter chocolate, the wrapping is wonderfully original and indicative of what you’ll be trying. This one had a crazy looking fish on the packaging – slightly off-putting in a weird kind of way. But you can’t fault them for bringing a bit of fun into the chocolate world.

Underneath the outer layer you’re met with the usual gold wrapping which does give it a delightful feeling of comfort and luxury – before the madness begins.

Zotter Raspberry, Coconut and Trout Chocolate Bar Coating

The chocolate bar itself has a delightful pink chocolate coating with the colour given from the sweet raspberries. Before I opened it up I didn’t know what to expect. I kind of thought that the bar should have been milk chocolate – I should have read the description properly! When I see pink chocolate I do find it off-putting, but that’s my problem. Taste wise, the outer lay is nice, fresh with a wonderful zing to it.

Zotter Raspberry, Coconut and Trout Chocolate Bar Cross-section

But it’s the inside that is the most intriguing. I’m not a huge fan of coconut. To be truthful it’d be the last ingredient that I’d look for when trying to find a new chocolate bar to try. But I thought I’d give it a go as I wondered what it’d be like with the fish. What you will find, however, is that there’s neither a fishy taste nor aroma. The actual trout content is 0.4% so you’re not going to look for any hollandaise sauce to go with it. But there are some other ingredients that may surprise you, such as onions, bay leaves and fennel – very strange.

Zotter Raspberry, Coconut and Trout Chocolate Bar Fluffy Centre

This centre is light and fluffy and very much like marshmallow. But not. It’s a gimmick centre that doesn’t do much for me. It’s not chocolaty enough. It’s sweet, with a rough texture but it doesn’t give me the ‘wow factor’ that I look for in chocolate. To be honest I didn’t really expect it to. Although I did hope.

Intrinsically it’s not a bad bar. But I’d hesitate to call it ‘chocolate’. I’d prefer to call it ‘confectionary’. Interesting, unique are all words you can be used to describe it. But I prefer: ‘missable’.

Rating:
  • Taste: 60% – nice, but nothing special
  • Texture: 55% – a bit soft for my liking
  • Appearance: 70% – actually very good –
  • Nutritional Information: 80% – there’s a good amount there
  • Price: 65% – at around £2.65 it’s expensive for the volume you get. But for the novelty factor it’s not bad.
  • Overall: 66% – could have been a lot worse given it had fish in it. But thankfully you couldn’t taste it!

    3. Fish and chocolate? I guess you had to try it for sheer weirdness, but the thought of this makes me feel quite ill. Being a vegetarian doesn’t help, but I never liked fish even when I did partake of the odd bit of flesh.

@chocolatereview This is just too weird – it’s a rare bar of chocolate I wouldn’t try given the chance, but this is one of them!
