The first thing I noticed was the very crunchy exterior. Leaving them out for a bit is probably the best bet as it nicely softens them up and makes the inside extremely soft and light. They’re very much like the Caffè Macchiato Truffles, just its a soft, delicate orange flavour rises from the truffle as it hits your mouth and not the similarly subtle coffee flavour.
Pauline and Mark who make the truffles rightly say on their site “And who is Terry anyway?” And that’s so true. I’m not a big fan of his chocolate oranges as they taste exceptionally fake, whilst these truffles superbly get across their handmade nature. They’re little balls of Sicilian sunshine that no mass-produced chocolate can dare attempt to match. Also I’ve tried the Charbonnel et Walker Pink Champagne Truffles which were very nice, but don’t manage to come anywhere close to the My Chocolate Bar truffles which was a surprise as Charbonnel has many years of chocolate-making experience behind them.
Part of the reason I set up this blog was to showcase the fantastic chocolatiers we have in this country, and worldwide. I wanted to encourage people to try the small chocolate producers as well as try some of the novel products that even some of the bigger ones come up with. It’s people like Pauline and Mark that make it worthwhile and immensely rewarding.
The problem I have is that I still have to review the chocolate that the big boys produce. Next I’ve got a Wispa Gold to review, but that’s like going from a finely tuned Ferrari to just another Ford Escort that will get you from A to B but give you know where near the pleasure o the journey.
Rating:
Taste: 90% – I’m giving them a slightly lower score than the Caffè Macchiato Truffles because those were right up my street. These orange ones were delightful, but pressed a couple fewer buttons – but that’s just down to personal taste.
Texture: 99.5% – Again, there were excellent. It was also nice to try them refrigerated, which on a day like this, was a great idea.
Appearance: 99.5% – They do a fantastic job with how they package and create their truffles and many other chocolate makers could learn a lesson from them.
Nutritional Information: 77% – all the important information is readily available. If you’re eating truffles then you’re not exactly concerned about the calories, or any other statistic – just enjoy them.
Price: 75% – I do think they’re great value. I checked the prices against the Thorntons truffles and they’re about the same sort of price, but so much better.
Overall: 88.2% – great stuff. I may share these ones though, just to see the look on their faces!
