Sainsbury’s Basics Dark Chocolate

For 27p I thought it was worth a punt and a I didn’t mind spending a couple of minutes to review this Sainsbury‘s Dark Chocolate. I’ve bought some great chocolate from Sainsbury’s in the past such as the NewTree Sexy Ginger Dark Chocolate and the amazing Taste The Difference Limited Edition Creamy Filled Coconut Chocolate Bar, but I didn’t expect this exceptionally cheap bar to come anywhere close to those heights – and I wasn’t wrong.

I’m not sure if its because I’ve just done some gardening, but this bar tastes earthy, it may not be as bland as the Mauxion Milk Chocolate bar I bought recently from Asda for 60p, but there’s no real depth to it. This bar has the usual lower than average fair that you’d expect from thier Basics range.

It’s obviously not going to compete with the £3.95 Pralus Trinidad 75% Dark Chocolate and doesn’t intent to. But if you’re on a tight budget but love dark chocolate and you’re having a night in with some cheap booze then why not buy a bar? I would, however, buy some Green & Blacks (as Sainsbury sell it) as well just in case you don’t like. it.

There’s also another option. I see this chocolate as being a great bar to either grate on top of ice cream or to melt and use to make chocolate confectionery as rice crispy cakes.

Rating:

Taste: 45% – not as bad as I actually thought it would be. There may be no depth to it, but you wouldn’t expect anything else.

Texture: 55% – It’s a very tough bar to break and doesn’t melt easily.

Appearance: 30% – It’s a white label with “dark chocolate” and a strap line that reads “no fancy packaging, just a good bar of chocolate”. And I think that sums it up really.

Nutritional Information: 85% – Great information! And on their website they have more information if you’d like it.

Price: 95% – for 27p you can’t argue really. I’d say its more like an 89p bar.

Overall: 62% – It punchiest above it’s weight.

You can buy from Sainsbury’s online.
