Rainforest Alliance Certified Dark Chocolate

I’m starting to love Twitter. It’s allowed me to find so many more chocolatiers that probably wouldn’t have been possible just spending hours searching Google (which I sometimes do). One of the recent conversations I’ve had was with Christine who runs the Chocolate Truffle Co chocolatiers in Essex. The upshot of our conversation was that she’d agree to send over some of her 64% Dark Chocolate From Costa Rica. I’ve now received the chocolate in the post today and have been rushing through everything I had to do to so I could review it as soon as possible.

In the world of chocolate, there are some chocolate makers that choose to spend a lot of money on packaging and use that to play a part in your overall experience. Whilst there are chocolatiers that just focus on making great chocolate. And the Chocolate Truffle Co is one of those.

First off the aroma to their Costa Rica 64% dark chocolate bar is very much like the Pralus Trinidad, but not as sharp. There’s a distinctive cider note to it which gives it a great deal of depth and character.

And the flavour is absolutely fantastic. There are notes of cherry and almond with a delicious smokey after taste. It really is exceptional – and I’m not just saying that because Christine sent it over. Another thing you’ll notice is the deep, dark brown colour which is far from approaching black on the scale, but just the right tones for a 64% cocoa content chocolate bar.

The melt is divine and does manage to linger on your taste buds in a way that entices you to try some more. I really do love this bar and I’m trying to think of chocolate I don’t like to make myself feel better for loving this bar.

Another great feature of the Chocolate Truffle Co chocolate bars is that they have Rainforest Alliance Certification which means that the cocoa has come from their Rainforest Alliance farms which actively support sustainable farming. This basically means that the farms work towards conserving the native ecosystem, protect local wildlife, conserve water use, treat their workers fairly and a whole host of other factors. If these are factors that are important to you, as they are for me, then you should definitely take a look around and see what other chocolate bars and truffles they have. Did I see Ginger Sling truffles ;-) ?

It is so hard for some of the country’s fantastic chocolatiers to stand out of the crowd given the huge marketing budgets of some of the global confectionary companies. Each has their place, but I just hope that people try these smaller chocolatiers who make outstanding and imaginative chocolate!

Rating:

Taste: 97% – The dark chocolate was robust, deep and full of character.

Texture: 90% – The break was nice and crisp whilst the melt was sensational and long lasting.

Appearance: 75% – It’s hard for smaller manufacturers to create enticing wrapping given the cost. I’m glad that some focus primarily on the quality of their product.

Nutritional Information: 75% – I was actually very impressed with the level of information present.

Price: 99% – You’ve got to buy a box of 12 for £12 + P&P (or £10.20 for a limited time). That works out to be just 85p each for 48g – this is outstanding value!

Overall: 87.2% – You really have to try them if you love dark chocolate and the world’s environment.

You can buy direct from Chocolate Truffle Co.

They’ve also got a whole load of other chocolate bars including Almonds on White chocolate, fruit & nut, raspberries on white chocolate, crystalized ginger or dark chocolate. Yum!!
