I can’t remember if it was Ethical Superstore or Plush themselves that sent me this Organic Belgian Chocolate Box as they both sent stuff around the same time. But I’ve held back the review as I thought they’d be more suited for my collection Christmas chocolate reviews as they come in a perfectly sized box for Christmas giving and even comes wrapped in a bright red sleeve which also adds to the sense of festivity.
I dove straight in to the praline as I’m a busy man and why wait any longer to try them out. To be honest I was a touch underwhelmed with this one. I’m generally not a fan, but I know that pralines such really be crispy with a strong hazelnut flavour – this wasn’t. In fact I think it kept too religiously to the ‘Belgian’ characteristic of being creamy. If you were expecting something with some resistance and crunchy texture then you’d be left disappointed. Similarly, if you prefer rich chocolates then I’m sure you’d appreciate it. Either way, there wasn’t a huge amount of flavour present.
I think my taste buds must be on strike as I also couldn’t pick up a great deal of coconut in the next one. Visually it looks like the coconut would dominate proceedings, alas not. You definitely get the texture, there’s no denying that, but flavour, and it’s just not punchy enough for my liking.
I approached the Brut de Noir not knowing what it was going to be like and again I left wanting more flavour. There’s a touch of sharpness there and a hint of robustness you’d expect from the 70% cacao, but not enough.
To be honest, after the white chocolate coffee I’d had my fill. I hate being negative about chocolate, especially when people put so much effort, but they’re just not punchy enough for me. Of course, and I always say this, there were be people that like them, not least for their organic status…. but I’m not a fan.
So it’s going to be a quick rating of 50%, mainly because I can see what they’re trying to do, they’re the nicely packaged and there is a good deal of dietary information that people with a preference for organic chocolate may appreciate.
Also don’t let this review put you off, I have loved other stuff they’ve done such as the handcrafted Santas.
