The Mounds Dark Chocolate Coconut bar is very much the Bounty Bar’s less attractive cousin. And what a surprise, its made by Hershey’s. But that’s the problem when you go to the Caribbean, you basically just have a choice of their stuff or Charles chocolate from Trinidad which is also not very good. But, that’s being a tad unfair. Being from the Hershey stable I automatically pre-judge it.
I don’t often enjoy coconut chocolate bars and although its no where as nice as the Limited Edition Creamy Filled Coconut Chocolate Bar its not as bad as it could be. Yes the coconut is very gritty and doesn’t melt in your mouth as the Sainsbury bar did, yes its also pretty bitter as the chocolate itself does dissolve, but at the end of the day its a perfectly acceptable bar that many coconut-lovers will thoroughly enjoy. I doubt they’ll go back for more, but at least its a palatable bar.
I paid about a pound for the bar, which I know is expensive but I was encouraged to buy it purely because it was a dark chocolate bar. Perhaps next time I’ll think a bit more carefully before I part with my cash!
Rating:
Taste: 50% – the nicely sweet dark chocolate saves the score as the coconut is too bitter!
Texture: 20% – the coconut is very difficult to chew and feels like its poor quality coconut.
Appearance: 70% – I actually liked the packaging and the two individual bars looked very appetising.
Price: 40% – I know if you’re buying it in the States, it’d be cheaper, but I don’t think they’d sell it at a price I’d be prepared to pay.
Nutritional Information: 95% – there’s good information on the bar and on their website.
Overall: 54% – pass!
