I haven’t reviewed any Montezuma’s chocolate for a while – I keep forgetting about them as often they just don’t stand out as much as the Hotel Chocolat or the Chocolate Trading Company as providing chocolate that really wows the taste buds. But as I’m working through the rest of the chocolate collection I cam across this white chocolate and cinnamon bar.
Another issue I have with Montezuma‘s is that they don’t really try and make their packaging look interesting. Compare the photo above with that of the Amatller Ecuador Single Origin 85% Dark Chocolate Bar, the Amedei Porcelana 70% Dark Chocolate Bar or the Valrhona Caraibe 66% Cacao which not only has the simplicity of the Montezuma’s bar, but also brings a whole heap of elegance to it. I’m of the opinion that Montezuma’s are really missing a trick with thi two-colour packaging.
You could say that they let the chocolate do the talking and that’d be fair for this cinnamon chocolate bar. The aroma is delightful. It reminds me of egg nog and Christmas morning. There’s a great deal of warmth to it that is very welcome.
The flavour is delightfully soft and under-stated and much better than the Cadbury Dream bar that I’m going to upload the review of this week. This bar is less sweet than traditional white chocolate, with the sweetness replaces by the cinnamon flavour.
All in all, thats the most important factor. The flavour is fantastic and should be enjoyed in small pieces as the sweetness certainly does add up as you enjoy each mouthful.
Another aspect, however, that I didn’t like was the lack of nutritional information. This was the sum total of what they provided other than stating that the ingredients are organically grown and is “vegetarian and gluten free” – what there’s no vegetarians in it?
I’d hope they’d do a bit more research into the calorific content etc, as white chocolate is traditionally fattier than other forms of chocolate.
Apart from the packaging and lack of nutritional information, I still like the bar, and I may even be inclined to say that its the best white chocolate bar I’ve tasted this year.
