The very kind Sarah from Vroom Foods Inc. sent these Buzz Bites all the way from California to try and seeing as I’ll try virtually anything chocolate related I thought I’d give them ago. The problem I have, however, is that I react overtly to caffeine. The buzz I get from it can be measured on a Richter Scale – it’s that bad. If I have a cup of tea or coffee at 7pm I won’t be able to get to sleep until the small hours. So I waited for a couple of days to find the perfect opportunity to give them a spin.
I choose the morning of making the long journey down to the Hotel Chocolat Christmas Launch to take one to test the effect. But being the wimp I am, I only had half of it and from that alone I was flying! Even after getting chuff all sleep and taking the dog out for a long walk at about 8am I had no problem staying alert! I finished off the other half a block on the way down and it kept be going through the heat and dashing around the underground from station to station and chocolate shop to chocolate shop.
It was only about 12 hours later, after a hectic day that I started feeling tired. But still, I managed to carry all that chocolate, climb countless flights of stairs, walk a fair way, and cope with irate commuters with ease. I’ve got the plain chocolate buzz bites to try later, but I’ll leave those for a day where I know I’ll struggle unaided!
But how much caffeine is in one of these little squares? Well it equates to 1 cup of real coffee, 1 1/4 cans of the main energy drink, 2 cups of tea and 3 cans of cola – all in that little cube which is smaller than a dice. If you look at the actual numbers you’ll pay about $0.50 per cube here for 100 mg of caffeine, but $2.29 for 80mg of caffeine in an energy drink (and you don’t have to go pee!)
And what did they taste like? Well very nice indeed. There was no harshness which I did expect and the texture was very agreeable. Of course you’re not eating it for the taste or the texture, but the buzz and to keep you awake after a hard night out and you’ve got important meetings.
