Lucuma Gold Raw Chocolate Bar

I’ve got a whole load of absolutely fantastic chocolate here today but I’m going to review the Lucuma Gold Handmade Raw Chocolate Bar from Conscious Chocolate first for a couple of reasons: I’m intrigued to find out what Lucuma tastes like and I’ve reviewed their raw Chilli chocolate before and loved it and wanted to find out if the rest of their chocolate was just as a delicious.

When Emma asked me if I’d like to try a couple more of her bars I chose this one as well as the 80% dark chocolate one. However, she did suggest that this bar is an acquired taste and not everyone would love it, although she also said that children often do enjoy it.

For those that don’t know, Lucuma is a tropical fruit often found in Peru and is sometimes called “eggfruit”. To be honest, before I visited the Conscious Chocolate website I’d not heard of it either.

The literature than came with the delivery describes Lucuma as having a reach creamy taste and texture and I’d certainly agree with that. The flavour is very subtle and very hard to describe. There are definite creamy notes to it but also with that the fruitiness does tantialise your taste buds for a good while after. There is also a wonderful aftertaste that is very pleasant indeed. I’m not sure if its the agave nectar, the coconut butter or the cinnamon that gives it the rounded taste, or a combination of them all, but I’d certainly be placing an order of a whole load of this and her other chocolates for my brother’s family for Christmas. It really is that agreeable

However, what’s more beautiful is the fact that these chocolate bars are free from pesticides, dairy products, gluten, soya and refined sugar so would be suitable for virtually everyone with dietary requirements.

What’s more, the only sweetener is in the natural form of agave nectar (cactus syrup) and is suitable diabetics (I’ll add mother to the list of Conscious chocolate recipients this Christmas). They can also be eaten by coeliacs and those that only wish to eat raw food.

The beauty continues, however, when you look at the price. Each bar is only £1.88 and so is certainly worth the price!

Often I taste chocolate (and I do everyday) and I feel oily afterwards. I can often feel my skin getting a bit itchy and feel like I’ve had a sugar overdose. But with this chocolate I really am left wanting more. Thankfully I’ve got a bar of her 80% intense raw chocolate which I’ll be reviewing tomorrow (if not before).

Also, you may think that as the ingredients are raw that the chocolate won’t keep long. The best before date for the chocolate I’ve got is 21st August 2010 – so you’ve got nothing to worry about there!

Another thing I must point out is that I absolutely love the new design and branding. Beforehand it was very rustic, but now the Conscious logo and packaging is divine!

Rating:

Taste: 85% – It’s not exactly conventional chocolate but it really did hit the spot and a welcome break from the sugar overdose I normally have.

Texture: 85% – It’s just so natural it was falling apart. The bar just melts in your mouth and generally wonderful.

Appearance: 90% – I LOVE the branding, the packaging and the literature that came with the chocolate.

Nutritional Information: 75% – there’s no way that a small producer can afford to work out calories and % of RDA etc. But what Emma does concentrate on, and do very well, is to show the nature of the ingredients, where they’re from and who can eat them.

Price: 85% – The price is exceptional. For me, everyone should buy a couple of bars at least and try them out. It’s not like they’re expensive.

Overall: 84% – Superb! I’ll be putting an order in for Christmas soon.

You can buy direct from Conscious Chocolate.
