Handmade Dark Chocolate From Cornwall

After doing my bit for British businesses I had my August holiday in Devon and took a trip over to Looe in Cornwall where I thought I’d try some of the dark chocolate they had on sale in a gift shop there. Now, most of these shops seem to specialise in fudge, toffee and short bread, but I did manage to find one that had some local dark chocolate. I couldn’t resist, so I bought some.

I was feeling a bit tight but I thought I’d take a punt and spend £2.99 on this un-known chocolate bar. What made me buy it was that it was locally handmade which differed from some of the stuff I saw on dartmoor that said it was Cornish or from Devon but was actually made in the Midlands. Another thing that made me buy it was the bulkiness of it – its a very chunky 100g.

I’m used to the dark chocolate of the Amedei Chuao 70% and the Simon Coll 70% which are exceptional dark chocolate bars, but was a bit wary of this 56% bar my range of choice is 70%-85%. But was I glad I tried it? Most definitely!

When you open it up it looks nothing special, but when you break a piece off and look at the texture then you should be almost guanenteed to enjoy it – it looked just so smooth. The aroma did remind me of the Valrhona 66% Dark Chocolate as it was very smooth. However, the smoothness of the aroma was nothing compared to the taste. It’s exceptional if you’re looking for a slightly sweet, half-way house chocolate.

I’m trying to “place” the flavour, but I just can’t. Perhaps there’s a touch of cherry-type sweetness to it? But however, you describe it, the taste and texture is something not to be missed.

If you did want to buy some then you can from Kernow Chocolate where you can also get fairtrade chocolate, orange chocolate, nutty chocolate, no added sugar chocolate, mint chocolate, ginger chocolate, coffee chocolate and chilli chocolate for the lower price of £2.25.

For two bars you’ll pay around £2.50 in postage. For 4 bars that’ll be around £3.00.

Rating:
Taste: 90% – just hit the spot! I’ve been restricting sugar lately so maybe I was craving ;-)
Texture: 80% – lovely and crisp
Apparence: 65% – but they’re handmade and the taste is the most important thing!
Price: 65% – the online price is good, but you’ll have to buy loads to get good value on the delivery charges.
