I bought these Glico Ichigo Pocky strawberry sticks as I thought they’d be at least slightly chocolaty, but alas I was disappointed. The Japan Centre describes them as “Chocolate Covered Pretzel Sticks”, but I think they’d win the Lord Lucan prize for chocolatness. Not that I’m complaining, they were very nice, just don’t buy them if you need a chocolate fix.
Again they Japanese have come up with a functional box design which encourages you to eat the strawberry sticks individually – its just a shame that us Brits tend to gorge ourselves on anything remotely enjoyable.
They’re also clever in the fact that they don’t give you the strawberry end to pick out the sticks, but the plain end – its just a shame that that doesn’t make good photography.
I think there were about 15 of them in there – but I only realised it was a good idea to count them after I’d tucked into a few of them. I’m sure you’d suffer the same plight as you dive into them.
These little blighters are pretty damn aromatic too. As soon as you prize open the internal packaging you’ll get a fairly strong strawberry woft.
It would appear that the actual flavour, however, is less eminent that the aroma – which is no bad thing in itself as I feel they’ve got the flavour balance just about right.
They’re about £2.39 which is hideously expensive for what you get, but its worth buying them to see what they’re like. I won’t go into a detailed review, but I’d give these a score of about 45% purely based on the price and the lack of chocolate.]
