My childhood was scarred by poor quality, mass-produced fudge. The sum total of it was the hideous stuff you get from gift shops when you’re on holiday in Devon or Cornwall. It wasn’t until I saw the Fudge Kitchen on Twitter and looked at the huge range of fantastic fudge did I feel inclined to ask the guys there for a sample. Dan there agreed and sent on four slices – I only hoped for one. In the fantastic gift box I got the Double Trouble chocolate slice, which I’m reviewing here, the classic chocolate one, a rich chocolate orange slice, and a Belgian chocolate swirl. Yum yum yum!

First impressions are very important when it comes to buying a chocolate gift, and equally so when you’re buying yourself a sweet treat. The gift box from the Fudge Kitchen just looked fantastic – black with gold embossing. But its when you open up the box and find four large slices of fudge wrapped in paper – if you’re not drooling at this point, then there’s something wrong with you?

These fudge pieces are very large indeed. They’re about 15mm deep, 115mm wide and 65mm tall. That’s a whole load of fudge, and you’ll soon note that a slice that large will last an awful long time. You may have issues with the fact that the fudge will last about 10 days and with 4 slabs in a box you may find yourself racing to get them polished off quickly. For me these fudge slabs would be an irregular treat (as I enjoy chocolate every day for this blog), so if I had a box of four I’d give some of them to friends or family (although I’d actually want them all myself!)

When you unwrap each piece and bite in you’ll notice that they’re incredibly moist. Its none of this dry rubbish you’ll often get. In the picture at the very bottom of this review you’ll see a close-up from my microscope and you’ll just see how moist it is from that. But, one thing I like to do is to break off bits with my fingers. As you do you can feel how soft it is, its just wonderful.

Each time you try some of this fudge you’ll notice that it totally occupies your mind. Three of your five senses fade. You’re left with an unrivaled taste. It consumes you. After you come out of a momentary lapse of concentration you will notice that the fudge changes consistency and feels like a cool duvet on a hot summer’s day. Its difficult to explain but literally it melts to hug every part of your mouth in all consuming delight.

Words do fail me. This is only the second time that a non-chocolate bar has had this sort of an affect – the Caffè Macchiato Truffles. If I had to choose a chocolate treat that I’d fight for, these would be one of them – no doubt about it.

But the biggest accolade comes from the fact that I’m now a fudge convert. Prior to today I thought there’d be no chance. But thanks to Dan and everyone else at The Fudge Kitchen I’m a convert. If you already love fudge, or are willing to be persuaded, give them a try.
