Yes you heard that right, dark chocolate made with Earl Grey Tea. I’ve come across some strange combinations in my time, but never anything like this from such a renowned chocolatier as Dolfin.
For starters, I loved the packaging. It comes in pouch similar to rolling tobacco similar to the Rococo Organic Chocolate With Cardamom and gives it an rustic, natural appearance.
The chocolate itself is very unusual in both texture and taste. The texture is crunchy and “bitty”. I doubt its meant to be a smooth bar of dark chocolate, but its raison d’etre is to be unusual. And that’s what you can say about the flavour. There’s a definite hint of Earl Grey tea, frankly its unmissable. Although its strange, the flavour of the tea works very well with the mild dark chocolate, but also seems to have a note of marigold and hazelnut with it.
The only issue I had was that I couldn’t actually work out what per centage the cocoa content was. There appears to be around 55%, but I could be wrong.
I’d say that this Dolfin Dark Chocolate With Earl Grey Tea is for people that don’t mind trying something different and has the ability to use their imagination.
Dolfin do chocolate bars made with pink peppercorn, aniseed and ginger (separate bars of course) which sound fantastically interesting. Thy also do a Marsala milk chocolate bar too. Now I wish I bought one of those in my last order. Perhaps I’ll get one in the next?
Rating:
Taste: 90% – I know I shouldn’t like it this much, but I do. It’s not the chocolate itself that seems to be the fantastic element, but how it works with the other flavours.
Texture: 80% – I was expecting smooth, but got rustic. It’s no bad thing and adds to the overall experience.
Appearance: 90% – the smokey room with wine glasses staining anything they’re rest upon, over-ripe cheese and this chocolate bar from Belgium.
Nutritional Information: 70% – they have some great information on the packaging. Just that its a bit small and in a continental format.
Price: 90% – At £2.25 for 70g its definitely worth trying!
Overall: 84% – a great chocolate bar.
I’ve been granted access to the Dolfin press area and managed to get the nutritional information:
