Paul from The Chocolate Cafe sent me some of these ginger and dark chocolate sticks to see what I thought of them and I’m started to get worried about his ability to send me stuff that I just love. I not only love honeycomb and loved the honeycomb bar he sent recently but now I get sugared ginger coated with dark chocolate. Hello – I’m in heaven.
As a child I was accustomed to the traditional crystallised ginger which can get a bit too much after a few chunks. It’s incredibly sharp and intensely sweet. These little sugared ginger strips aren’t. They’re fairly mild but still manages to put across the distinctive ginger flavour with the slightest zing at the end. The dark chocolate is similarly mild but seems to have a milky flavour as it melts. I’m not sure it’s because most things taste mild compared to ginger, or if it’s because the dark chocolate has only 54% cocoa solids. But I’d say that anything more bitter would distract from the ginger flavour and would fight for attention. With the milder chocolate the ginger flavour becomes the most prominent.
I also loved the texture. It reminded me of a Chinese meal where there’s a softness that is combined with a good resistance that you don’t often get along with chocolate. The problem I had was that I kept biting into it and taking the entire slice of the ginger with just half of the chocolate coating. I’ll just have to bite in further in future.
I could seriously eat the whole bag in one go. But I’m pacing myself! A quick rating as I don’t have price information yet. But I’d definitely give it a 75% – purely as its right up my street. Others may like the ginger to be more intense, but here it tastes more natural.
