After the recent review of the dark chocolate from Cornwall which was only 57% I thought I’d ratchet the scale up a bit and try this 72% Extra Dark Chocolate Bar from Dammenberg. Now I wouldn’t say that 72% was “extra dark” as it doesn’t reach the frequent 80% level, or indeed, the 99% of the Michel Cluizel Noir Infini.
The packaging doesn’t look overtly appealing, it just leaves the inherent beauty of chocolate to do all the selling and if you’re buying online from The Chocolate Connoisseur (as I did), then you’ll probably buy on the description anyway.
The price is very attractive and probably reflects the money saved on packaging.
The aroma is meek and mild and you would definitely not notice it if you’re in the same room as some Coffee Bean Chilli Dark Chocolate which was almost over-powering.
The reason you’re buying the chocolate, however, is for the taste and you’ll find its almost faultless. At the lower level of the taste range its adequately sweet, you can taste the chocolate, but the flavour is quite “thin”. It doesn’t seem to linger too long on the taste buds.
As for the texture, it looks like it may not be as smooth as some of the other bars I’ve reviewed recently and in actual fact, it wasn’t. There’s a very slight gritty taste you could expect from smaller production lines.
In the past I’ve actually thrown away some chocolate I’ve reviewed in the past, like the no added sugar with shelled hemp seeds, but this is far from being anywhere like the Dammenberg 72% Extra Dark Chocolate Bar. I’d just say its a good upper-mid range dark chocolate bar – and I’m sure my mother will thoroughly enjoy it!
You can buy it from The Chocolate Connoisseur for £2.90 which is very reasonable indeed.
