Corazon Del Ecuador Milk Chocolate - Red Star Chocolate

It’s a strange thing when you taste milk chocolate that’s not mixed with a million different ingredients and actually has a pretty decent cocoa content. And that’s what I found when I tried this Corazon Del Ecuador Milk Chocolate which is a handmade bar by Duffy from Red Star Chocolate. I’ve tried his 72% dark chocolate bar which also had cocoa from Ecuador so I was very interested to see how this one would fair. Not being the biggest milk chocolate lover I was concerned that it’d be either radically different or too similar to the traditional, mass-produced stuff we see from the big-players.

As with the other version, this bar had a lovely scenic picture of a couple of mountains and a line of clouds, which I just love – it’s great to have a departure from the traditional, bold colours. Also with this bar you have the complete lack of artificial ingredients such as flavourings and colourings – you only have organic sugar, cocoa beans, cocoa butter and milk powder and that simplicity really does shine through when tasting it.

There obviously is a milky edge to it but it does come with that Olvatiney flavour you get with milk powder – it’s no criticism, just an observation. But you also do get a tobacco and cooked banana edge which is welcome. It is, however, caught between being an all-out milk chocolate bar that you’d expect at 30%ish and a darker bar as it seems to pull in two directions. The sweet sugar element is very prominent that wins the battle over the cocoa taste.

The texture is very crumbly too and has a dry edge to it. This is obviously due to the absence of an emulsifier being used. For those that enjoy trying chocolate from smaller producers this wouldn’t be a probably be a problem. But for those that prefer the oily chocolate offered from other producers that use vegetable fats in the production of their chocolate, then you’re unlikely to like this bar much. But I don’t see the point in dumbing down chocolate production. There’s plenty for those people to enjoy already.

What I did find was that this bar worked very well with a good old cuppa. The sweetness of the chocolate works against the mellow tea flavours – delightful. And at £3.50 for the bar then you can’t go wrong. I really did enjoy reviewing this bar after a hard day at the office.

Rating:
  • Taste: 70% – different, milky and a great departure from the usual fair

  • Appearance: 90% – I’m a sucker for this peaceful packaging and rustic mould.
  • Nutritional Information: 70% – there’s not really a lot to write about.
  • Price: 70% – there will be a great number of people willing to pay £3.50 to try something different
  • Overall: 73% – definitely worth trying
