Chocolate Cups

With Christmas around the corner (well it is when I’m writing this); surely it’s a great time to start thinking about all those dinner parties and family gatherings? The second best thing about Christmas is obviously all the food with the puddings being the highlight of the festivities for me. Many people just pop down to their local supermarket and buy stuff in bulk, but if you really wanted to impress your friends and family what better than making your own deserts and presenting them in these chocolate cups?

I tried some chocolate shot glasses before, and to be honest, they weren’t very good. So I decided to try and find something a bit more down the fine, gourmet chocolate end of things. And here’s what I found.

Dark Chocolate Dessert Cubes
At the Chocolate Trading Co. you’ll get these fairly substantial dark chocolate cups – or more precisely chocolate cubes which are about 4cm in each dimension and with a slightly rounded bottom. They’re made out of 72% dark chocolate so that’ll probably go fantastically well with a much lighter chocolate mousse or ganache – and maybe even a more sophisticated version of blamange? You can get the six of them for £7.75 which I’d say is very good value for money.

White Chocolate Dessert Cups
You can also get these in milk chocolate and dark chocolate too. I can just see a colourful presentation in the three chocolate versions of these on a big table at a dinner party. With the white you could have a strawberry mousse with sliced strawberry on top, whilst the others you could create some more boozy types of mouse with various fruity tops. Basically let your imagination go wild and at a price of £7.45 for the six, luxury chocolate cups then I’d say they’re pretty good value for money – they are for an important occasion anyway!

Dark Chocolate Heart-Shaped Cups
If you’re looking to create a lovely, romantic Christmas dinner for your wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend then why not offer a trio of these chocolate heart-shaped cups filled with your very own handmade chocolate ganache, or Angel Delight if you don’t have much time? These are much cheaper than the others, but only just over 1cm high, so you wouldn’t be able to fit much in them.

~ Cheap Alternatives ~

As an alternative you could try these from Chocolat At Home:

Tulip Dark and White Chocolate Cups
These ones come filled with some chocolate mousse already, so that does mean you’ve got less scope to get creative with them, however, you still have the opportunity to personalise them with your own decoration as they’re not filled right up to the top. They’re about 3cm tall and cost £4.50 for ten of them. I wouldn’t say the quality of them would be as good as the more expensive ones above, but still worth thinking about.

Snobinette Dark Chocolate Cups
So this is where we get the word “snob” from? In French it means something like “snooty” – although I can’t confirm that. These are taller than the tulips at about 2.3cm tall and you’ll get 20 in a box which costs £20. I’d suggest if you have a stronger flavour of filling then it might be a good idea to work with the dark chocolate shell. They may look less sophisticated than those above, but if you’re going for bulk then this might be your best option.
