Cheshire Chocolates Selection Box

I bought this box of 12 assorted chocolates from Cheshire Chocolates as I wanted to keep going with trying chocolates from non-high street stores and give the smaller chocolatiers a go.

Now the problem here is that I have absolutely no clue what-so-ever what’s in the box. Well was until I managed to find the “menu” tucked under some of the packaging. I’m just glad I found that. The issue is that before you buy you can’t choose your favourites. But I bought these a month ago and recall choosing some, but as I buy a lot of chocolate, perhaps that was some other chocolate shop. Anyhow, I’m trying to go through the buying process again and couldn’t find the way to choose which flavours you got.

For your benefit the options are:

  • Coconut Truffle
  • Mint Leaf
  • Strawberries and Cream
  • Apple & Cinnamon Truffle
  • Peach Heart
  • Crunchy Lemon
  • Praline Log
  • Passion Fruit Prism
  • Heavenly Banoffee Dome
  • Dark Rum Lion
  • Apricot and Saffron Dome
  • Creamy Caramel with a whole Hazelnut
  • Blackcurrant and Aniseed Truffle
  • Brazilian Coffee Crème
  • Mandarin Oval
  • Marc de Champagne Truffle
  • Dark Lime Maple Leaf
  • Nut Truffle
  • Kir Royal Truffle
  • Rum Truffle
  • Irish Cream Truffle
  • Ginger
  • Banana Truffle
  • Honeycomb

Doesn’t that just get your mouth watering? I’m sure whatever you do get; you’ll absolutely love trying the different flavours.

First off, I absolutely love the box. It’s perfectly created for giving chocolates as a birthday or Christmas present. It would be easy to wrap and the box is very sturdy.

And on to the reviews:

Coconut Truffle

First off, I’m not a huge fan of coconut (other than Malibu) but this coconut truffle was beautifully soft and delicate. The aroma wasn’t over-powering, the filling was subtle and sweet and the outside very nice milk chocolate.

Apple & Cinnamon Truffle
This isn’t my favourite one. At first I wasn’t sure if it was this one or Blackcurrant and Aniseed Truffle. Again, the milk chocolate coating was nice, but I found the apple and cinnamon truffle inside a bit too sweet for my taste.

Crunchy Lemon Truffle
I had high hopes for this one as I just love lemon flavoured chocolate. Unfortunately the coating was a bit too crunchy for my liking and over-powered the lemon truffle inside, which is very nice when you try it separately. Oh and I won’t even hazard a guess as to what this chocolate actually looks like.

Heavenly Banoffee Dome
Yikes! Sugar overload. I am partial to the odd bit of banoffee, but this was way too sweet for my liking. Perhaps there should have been a touch less caramel?

Dark Rum Lion
This is another very strong flavoured chocolate. It’s very nice and dark and juxtaposes the sweetness of the other chocolates.

Apricot and Saffron Dome
I wasn’t actually sure if I was going to like this one. But, indeed, I found it beautifully soft and delicate – I suppose like rose water would taste like (I’m assuming, as I’ve never tried it ;-) )

Blackcurrant & Aniseed Truffle
Wow – I loved this one. It may be fairly sweet but it was delicious. You must try one.

Dark Lime Maple Leaf
A true wonder, I just love lime chocolate (Tipyn Bach made some lovely ones for me!), and this was a delight that worked exceptionally well with the dark chocolate!

Kir Royal Truffle
This has Christmas written all over it (well not literally) – the appearance of it when I bit in just reminded me of Christmas and the taste was just as warm and comforting. The truffle centre, in this instance reminded me of the Milky Way centre – but that’s my problem. Very nice indeed.

Irish Cream Truffle
I’m not entirely sure what the aroma reminded me of, but it didn’t grab me as much as some of the others did. Thankfully the flavour was very nice (just short of exceptional). It was very sweet and didn’t taste massively of the Irish Crème, or indeed, alcoholic. Even though it didn’t remind me of Irish Cream, I did enjoy it.

Ginger
The aroma was very much “ginger” and as I love ginger my chops were salivating as much as my dog’s when she’s about to eat. The flavour, however, was slightly “wooden” and reminded me of those German ginger breads. Unfortunately the flavour didn’t match the aroma.

And I got a second Banoffee one – they could have given me a second blackcurrant one instead :-(

Rating:
Taste: 65% – there was some very nice ones, and some ones that I thought were just a bit too sweet. The issue is that everyone is different so you may like them.
Texture: 70% – the texture was great on all but the crunchy lemon truffle
Appearance: 70% – it’s difficult to fault them. Not many could compete with the brilliance of how Hotel Chocolat package their chocolates especially The Chocolatier’s Table or their Father’s Day Gift Bags, but they did do a good job.
Price: 70% – they’re not a bad price and is comparable to the Charbonnel et Walker Champagne Truffles and the Hotel Chocolat Pink Champagne Truffles.
Overall: 68.75% – good, but just misses the Wow factor.
