In 1814, chocolatier Jules Pares created the first chocolate factory in France, located in the Pyrenees Orientales. This chocolate factory was one of the first to ever use electricity. After changing hands and names a number of times over a century and a half, and surviving a number of setbacks such as fires and floods, this chocolate company was eventually purchased in 1981 by George Poirier, who changed the name of the company from Cantalou to Cemoi.
