When it comes to reviewing filled chocolates I always go with my first thoughts as the flavour hits me. Even though my initial reaction was a very positive “oh bloody hell” that doesn’t adequately describe the variety, depth and excellence of these caramels.
Let’s backtrack a bit...
“You wouldn’t get this down south” I thought as I walked out of Walmsley’s Butchers with a pair of chocolate pork pies in my hand. Of course its Ramsbottom chocolate festival weekend and that means that local companies try to add a bit more fun to their offerings and get into...
My first foray into alcohol was cider. After that I quickly moved on, and ultimately stayed with, Port for a good number of years. Similarly my first introduction to dark chocolate was Lindt. Twenty five years ago we didn’t have much choice in this country than that overly commercial chocolate maker...
This diet is killing me. Bad carbs are out, along with unnecessary sugary stuff. Thank my lucky stars I’m a chocolate reviewer and can consume biscuits, cakes and chocolate – all in the name of “work”. Truth be told, I was looking for an excuse to break free of...
Wiliam Curely's Nostalgia Jaffa Cakes have been the finest things that have passed my lips for many a week. They're soft, flavoursome and completely delicious. If you did want to get your loved-one something special this year, then you really can't look further than these.
It's a rarity for fudge to be made in a way that isn't too sweet. The dark chocolate variety of the these raspberry fudge slices certainly aren't, the white chocolate is. They're very nice, but you certainly have to like fudge.
Devnaa have stepped out from their traditional spicy product range and developed something with a touch more kick and punch. They're absolutely great if you need a caffeine hit or just fed up with soft and delicate chocolates.
A wonderful collection of dark chocolate bars with the one 40% Ben Tre milk chocolate bar. I'd love Marc to expand this collection though as I'm sure his fans would love him to offer a wider variety in these new 22g mini bars.
A luscious hot chocolate experience, but sadly it doesn't compare to drinking chocolate made with the dark stuff. Still, it had a very interesting character.
If you wanted to try something a little bit different for a dinner party then I suggest that you add Stilton or some other strong cheese to them and try them out on your guests - I'm sure they'll love them.
There's certainly no escaping the flavour of banana in this bar as it's not only present in a purée form in the centre, but also within the chocolate that coats it. I did find it far too sweet for a mature taste.
If you wanted chocolate truffles that are organic and use natural, unsweetened ingredients then I'm sure you'll love these ones. Make sure you also like dark chocolate though!
I wouldn't say this is Zotter's finest hand-scooped bar of all time, but at least it's one for those people that love his unusual range. The acidity was most certainly different and added to the experience, but I would have liked more of a cheese edge to it.
This is a very interesting bar of dark chocolate, but when compared to the rest of the Zotter range some may feel a touch underwhelmed given that there's no strange ingredients included.
This is a strange affair. Not only do not recall buying this bar of white chocolate with coconut pralinés feuilletés by Comptoir du Cacao but I’m not entirely sure if I like it or not. Logic says I shouldn’t. Hazelnut praline, white chocolate and coconut are three of my least favourite ways...
As a chocolate bar from a little-known chocolatier it's actually very good and compares favourably to the one produced by Thorntons. It may be more than twice the price of that bar too, but I feel it's worth it.
Many people may criticise Thorntons for their chocolate, but my view is that the blocks are vastly better than the novelty chocolate stuff they sell and even the most pretentious chocolate aficionado would actually like this bar.
To be honest I didn't know what to expect. Thinking about it, it should have been a more interesting bar of chocolate. In fact it was actually very boring. Rum is fantastic and chilli chocolate often lovely, but put together the flavours didn't work well together.
This Idiolio Origins Selection Cata Ocumare with Cocoa Nibs should have offered so much more, alas it came across as far too mild. I loved the texture and the aroma, it was just lacking in terms of flavour.
This is one of my favourite, mass-market style of chocolate bar as it has a fantastic texture and a very good combination of flavours. Of course its four times the price of a similar bar you could get in a local shop, but its worth it.
I know this chocolate bar was four months past it's best before date, but I could still pick out the ginger flavour, but that's about it. I can imagine it would be a nice bar for a Summer's evening, but it's just doesn't stand out for me.
This chocolate from the South Devon chilli farm hit the sport. It uses 60% couverture chocolate as well as some honeycomb and their won chillies that they grow at the farm. Other's might not like it because it doesn't use fine chocolate, but I love it.
This certainly isn't the best milk chocolate they've produced, but I still enjoyed the sharp flavours. The lemon and sea salt did work well together and make the inherent chocolate flavour stand out more. I'd love to try a 50% version of this bar to see what the salt could do with the darker tones.
It's a shame that you can't buy these online any more, but they were lovely, soft, creamy and full of flavour. Hopefully they'll change their website soon. But I fear they're just wholesaling now.
You would have thought that Tobasco chilli chocolate would be hotter than a weekend in Death Valley, alas it wasn't that hot. In fact it tasted more of ginger beer than anything else. The quality of the chocolate isn't all that great either. At a penny less than five Pounds too I just has to be a gimmick than any form of serious chocolate.
Unusually, these white foil-wrapped hearts chocolate were actually pretty nice. Perhaps I wouldn't reach for them as I do dark chocolate when I'm working and need a distraction. But still, they were a lot nicer than I thought they'd be.
Every chocolatier seems to sell chocolate hearts for Valentine's Day, but too few make anything worth taking notice off. Most of them seemingly use the cheapest couverture they can and then sprinkle some ingredients on top. There's nothing original about that.
These Madre Chocolate dark bars offered an excellent variety of flavours from both Hawaii and the Dominican Republic. There were all made exceptionally well. If you do get a chance to try them, then please do.
This Artisan du Chocolat Gingerbread Cookies White Chocolate is quite possibly my most favourite white chocolate bar of all time. I know its sweet, but unlike the others, there are various interesting flavours going on that seem to mitigate the sweetness.
Devnaa never fail to surprise me with how wonderful their chocolate is. The flavours are mild but sufficient to give you a clear, smooth taste that doesn't dominate your senses. They just produce fantastic Indian-inspired confectionery.
This review of the Butlers Almond & Orange Dark Chocolate was a guest review by Amanda who liked it, but thought it could have done with a deeper taste.
These are perfect for a chocolate and ginger lover at Christmas, there is some great crunch whilst the quality of the Valrhona chocolate certainly ads to the experience.
Sometimes its worth going to the ends of the earth to find wonderful chocolate. Thankfully we have the internet so we don't have to. This black truffle and sea salt bar was just splendid!!
I wasn't supposed to like these. As they're made with peanut butter they should have tasted too salty and overpowered the chocolate, but thankfully they didn't.
If its cold, you've got a headache or just generally stressed then reach for the Jaz and Juls hot chocolate to blow away that dark cloud hanging over you. This stuff is hot and spicy, but very enjoyable.
Truffles are the staple of so many chocolate companies, but they're so often not given the love and attention that they should be. These come across as nothing special to be honest, even though they do well at not coming across as too intense, they just don't have enough flavour to really get me excited about them.
Galaxy chocolate isn't for everyone. I know ladies and children generally go weak at the knees when they come across a bar. But for me its too sweet. But at Christmas we eat all sorts of stuff.
Without wanting to be hyper-critical, I just thought there was actually no chilli flavour in this bar at all. It could have been a very mild, and possibly, boring bar of dark chocolate.
I had hoped for some farily intense, interesting chocolate, but alas no. But I shouldn't expect all the chocolate I try to be full of flavour. Sublte is good some times.
If you're a fruit and nut fan then why not give this one a go from Green & Blacks which supports the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity. It's actually very addictive and I'm sure would be hugely appreciated.
When I tried chocolate made by small companies trying to do something different and with ethics then I feel a displeased when I don't actually like some chocolate I've reviewed and that's the case with this bar.
This selection box of unusual flavours from Matcha Chocolat is very interesting and utterly delicious. Some chocolatiers feel they can't be adventurous as they have to produce by committee. Katie does a great job breaking the mould and not being restricted to the same old flavours that many other chocolatiers offer.
Who would have thought it? A bar of white chocolate that I thought was absolutely fantastic? Well Amedei have come up trumps with this bar as they mix pistachios with white chocolate that is far from excessively sweet.
Of course Mint Aeros aren't the best chocolate you've ever tasted - probably nothing from Nestle would be. But they've got a market and they do a good job of supplying people with sweet confectionary.
We've tried a massive selection of flavoured chocolate bars, but to bring the most popular to the fore we've listed them below. But if your'e interested in finding reviews with certain ingredients and they're not listed below, please use the search box above.
