Le chocolat bio supérieur noir de la marque Carrefour
23 September 2009 in 74% Dark Chocolate, Rating 70%-74% by LeeHow good is my French? Well this 74% dark chocolate is the own label chocolate from the Carrefour supermarket in France. I managed to get hold of some courtesy of my brother who sort of lived there for a week.
To be honest I didn’t hold out much hope of it being all that grand being own brand. And without actually knowing the price it’d be difficult to guage value for money, but I’d probably say it was about €1.50 to €2.
I thought this Le chocolat bio supérieur noir 74% de cacao de la marque Carrefour would be as bad as the Mauxion Milk Chocolate With Raisins & Hazelnuts Bar I bought from Asda for 60p, but thankfully it was a great deal more appealing.
Own-brand products aren’t supposed to look visually appealing. The idea is that they don’t spend a great deal of money designing the packaging so they can keep the store price down. Thankfully the packaging belied the quality of the chocolate.
Now I’m not going to say it compares with Pralus Bresil 75% dark chocolate, but its perfectly reasonable. It’s substantially more bitter than the Pralus chocolate, but strangely still very interesting.
The chocolate does actually taste organic, I often say that organic chocolate does have a taste of the farmyard as with the Amatller Ghana Single Origin 85% Dark Chocolate Bar, however, its certainly not as noticeable as some of the organic Divine Chocolate.
There’s a strange sweet taste to it which is almost nutty, but not quite. It’s very hard to place. The flavour isn’t as complex as some I’ve tasted, but for the price I think it is, it’d be very good value for money.
Another aspect I liked was the nutritional information. It showed the ingredients, the calories etc and also gave an indication of what per cent of the French equivalent of the RDA the chocolate had for calaories, protein, sugars, fats, fibre and salt – great work guys!
I’d have to say that this Le chocolat bio supérieur noir 74% de cacao de la marque Carrefour isn’t a special dark chocolate bar, its not going to all that memorable. But I was more impressed with it than I thought I would be. So if you’re out in France and you need some dark chocolate, but don’t want to spend much then definitely give it a go.
Rating:
Taste: 70% – very respectable.
Texture: 65% – nothing special, but then again its better than average.
Appearance: 50% – it does the job, I don’t like chocolate that has cardboard within it to hold it together, but you’re not buying it for its looks.
Price: 75% – from the expected price I’d say it was very good value for money.
Nutritional Information: 95% – I just loved the figures and all the data.
Overall: 71% – I’m shocked it got such a high score too.
